Griff is surprised by Marty's aggression and calls him Chicken, as per usual this enrages Marty and he prepares for a fight. Griff again asks the question, this time to the 1985 Marty who pushes Griff away with a strong no. Marty tells his future son, who is now a little delirious to stay quiet and rises above the counter to confront Griff. Marty Jr continues to say no and Griff becomes agitated and hurls him over the counter next to the hidden 1985 Marty. Griffs asks Marty Jr if he's participating in tonight's opportunity, to which Marty Jr declines and the gang coax him into changing his mind. Marty ducks and hides behind the counter, at the same moment Griff and his gang re-enter the cafe and approach Marty McFly Jr. The clock tower ledge Doc destroys in 1955 is still visibly damaged during the 1985 shots of the clock tower.Īs Marty finishes with Wild Gunman he turns, looking at watch and sees his future son Marty Jr enter the cafe. This time Jennifer and Doc join Marty on the adventure as they travel 30 years into the future to save the next generation of the McFly family. Everything that follows that was "real" and therefore had weight and meaning, and was something the audience could care about. In 1989 the second installment of the time-travelling classic Back To The Future was released. At least in the first film, they kept the sucky timeline down to the opening 20 - 25 mins or so. This is confusing and a little alienating to the audience. So, in other words, the movie spends two out of three acts in sucky timelines that eventually never transpire. It's not until the third movie that we see that this future has now been erased (Marty didn't get into the drag race, and wasn't hit by the train, and therefore never injured his hand). He injured his hand so he can't play guitar any more, he works for some faceless corporation that fire him over a fax machine, and his son is a lamer version of himself. Minus points: The movie opens with Marty finding out about his own future in 2015, which is somewhat contradictory to Doc's dire warning in the first movie ("You must never know too much about your own destiny.") His future kind of sucks. But it balances this by having fun with the over-the-top world of 2015, with its ridiculous fashions and somewhat wide-of-the-mark predictions about where technology and politics would be. It gets surprisingly dark in places, especially the alternate 1985 where Hill Valley is a sleazy wreck. ![]() "What if someone went back to 1955 and changed history for the worse?" Everything else is written outwards from there, so at least it's a coherent movie, unlike some sequels I could name (Highlander 2, I'm looking at you.) It cleverly subverts and flips the message of the first movie - that your actions do matter, and by doing the right thing, you change the course of history for the better - and examines the flipside of that, that you can also make things much worse. Plus points: It has a strong central idea, i.e. It's a strange layer cake of scenes and ideas that work better than, worse than, or about the same as the original.
